AfterSchool KidzScience Professional Development

AfterSchool KidzScience Professional Development,
November 8th & 9th, 2010 in Berkeley

Join LHS GEMS AfterSchool KidzScience authors and our professional development team for a 2-day workshop in a "train the trainers" format.

Costs for these initial workshops are being subsidized by our funder, and each team attending the workshop will receive one free kit of their choice (a $175 value; one per location only).

AfterSchool KidzScience kits are engaging, inquiry-based science materials for use with children at grades 3–5. Based on tried-and-true LHS curricula, these “little GEMS” are adapted for use in after school programs such as Girls and Boys Clubs, Scouts, recreation and camp programs, or any out-of-school programs. Student leaders who are not necessarily certified teachers can use the easy-to-follow presentation instructions. The activities are easy to lead, excite children about science, build science knowledge and inquiry abilities, and help children learn important cooperation and teamwork skills.

During the two-day workshop, attendees will experience activities from a range of AfterSchool KidzScience kits. Special attention will be paid to:

  • fostering positive attitudes about science
  • questioning strategies
  • techniques for fostering an inventive and creative atmosphere for children
  • leading safe experiences for children

The AfterSchool KidzScience workshops will cover:

  • strategies to successfully manage children during hands-on science activities
  • support for integrating AfterSchool KidzScience kits into after school and out-of-school programs
  • tips on leading the activities
  • support for leading follow up trainings with staff

Date: November 8th and 9th, 2010
Location: Lawrence Hall of Science, Berkeley, CA
Cost: $245 for individuals, $225 each for teams of two or more
Cost includes: workshop fee, continental breakfast and sumptuous lunch each day; parking at LHS

Additional information on the AfterSchool KidzScience units.

Physical Science series:

Bubbles: Children gain an understanding of surface tension as they investigate how soap changes water, and then deepen their understanding by blowing and measuring soap bubbles.

Falling and Flying: While designing, building, and testing parachutes and air-powered rockets, children learn about air resistance.

Magnets: By exploring magnets and creating magnet tricks and inventions, children learn about magnetism.

Oobleck: Children act like scientists as they investigate the properties of a strange goopy material called Oobleck. They act like engineers by applying what they discover about Oobleck as they design, build, and test spaceships to land on Oobleck.

Life Science series:

Beach Science: By sorting beach objects and studying sand grains from different beaches, children learn how Earth’s surface changes over time and how these changes can be natural or influenced by humans.

Colors in Nature: Children learn about how plants’ and animals’ colors can help them survive. Children explore camouflage, warning colors, mimicry, and attracting colors through pictures and craft activities.

Exploring Habitats: Children explore the habitat right outside their door and discover the animals that live there.

Predators and Prey: Through games and exploration, children discover some surprising connections between predators and prey in their natural habitats.

Green Science series (coming in Spring 2011):

Alternative Energy: Children explore different sources of energy by designing and building solar devices, wind turbines, and energy-efficient city plans. Children learn about solar and wind power and how to use less fossil fuel.

Food from Plants: Through tasting and making food, children learn that food comes from plants and that people can grow plants in gardens.

Fresh Water: Children explore the ways we use water in our everyday lives and how we can conserve this limited resource.

Waste Not: Through hands-on activities and games, children learn about where our trash goes, how it decomposes, and how the choices they make can affect the earth.

Each kit includes:

  • Four full-color, sturdy session guides that provide step-by-step instructions, questions to stimulate children’s thinking, and extensive support for the leader
  • A handbook with helpful tips and science information for the leader
  • Sixteen colorful question cards that spark interest and extend learning
  • Materials for a group of up to 20 children to do all four sessions’ activities
  • An AfterSchool KidzScience Video Clips DVD for leaders that provides tips for leading activities easily and effectively (also available online)
  • A durable plastic tub for easy storage

Special features in the Kit Handbook:

  • Session summaries
  • Science background information
  • General tips on how to lead the activities
  • Glossary of terms
  • Tips on using the kit materials
  • Extension activities
