ASKS Professional Development On April 26 and 27, 2010, join LHS GEMS AfterSchool KidzScience (ASKS) authors and our professional development team for a 2-day workshop on the four kits in the new ASKS Physical Science series: Bubbles, Magnets, Oobleck, and Flying & Falling. These kits have been extensively field tested in out-of-school settings, and leaders do not need any science background to lead the activities. The workshop will implement a ‘train the trainer’ model. Participants will be expected to help afterschool staff implement these engaging and effective science activities in their afterschool programs. Costs for these initial workshops are being subsidized by our funder. Each team attending will get a free kit from the physical science series (one per location only). Over the course of the two-day workshop, attendees will experience activities from all four of the Physical Science ASKS kits. Special attention will be paid to:
Participants will learn how to successfully manage children during hands-on science activities as well as how to streamline the small amount of preparation and management required for the materials in the ASKS sessions. The workshop will provide direct examples and suggestions for effectively supporting the integration of the ASKS kits into an afterschool program. Other exciting features of the ASKS program materials will also be highlighted, including the "How-To Video Clips" and "Leader Tips Video Clips." The short, How-To Video Clips introduce the leaders to the science concepts and key activities in each kit. The Leader Tips Video Clips provide strategies that assist leaders in guiding and managing children through all kinds of hands-on science activities. We’ll also explore ideas for incorporating the videos as professional development tools for your program. To learn more about ASKS kits please see the ASKS program page.
